4-26 (Thurs)
We headed out to Sheridan, WY on Thurs. First we stopped in Bozeman to shop and mess around. ND bought an extender for her camera. We finally got on the road to Sheridan at 3:30. We only made it as far as Billings (5:30) when we decided to pull over and spend the night. We went over to Cabals and I bought a pair of shoes. I told ND that we spent our entire paycheck in one day.
It was raining and blowing when we woke up the next day in Billings. Our umbrellas were turning inside out as we were packing up the car.
I began driving to Sheridan, there was one point at which a gust of wind almost blew us into the other lane.
After arriving in Sheridan, nestled at the foot of the Big Horn Mountains, we checked into the Mill Inn then went downtown in the wind and rain to poke around in some of the shops. We then drove 35 miles to Buffalo. It was freezing cold because the wind was blowing so hard it went right through us. We walked down the street and took a tour of the 130 year old Occidental Hotel. Many famous and infamous characters have spent the night there: Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid, Ernest Hemingway, Buffalo Bill Cody, Huge O’Brian (actor), Tom Horn and Teddy Roosevelt to name a few.
We drove back to Sheridan in freezing weather with the wind continuing to try to blow us off the road. It felt like we were driving through a hurricane.
The top story on the local news this night was about the wind.
The word for today (Sat) was wind, wind, wind. What a harrowing day we had. It was still blowing when we got up this morning in Sheridan. After breakfast we hit the road back to Yellowstone. We agreed the driving was so hard that we should each only drive an hour at a time. We went through rain and snow all the while the wind was doing its best to blow us off the road. We finally made it back to Yellowstone. Now it's time to start planning our next trip!
